Porn and Historical Preservation

Pittsburgh’s Garden Theater, a former porno emporium that was closed earlier this year after a protracted legal battle between its owner and the city, is expected to be declared a historical landmark and saved from the wrecking ball. That’s ironic, considering the city wanted to do away with the adult cinema located there since the 1970s in order to revitalize the “economic corridor” in which it stands. Although developers have been consulted about potential uses for the 92-year-old structure, a historical designation would require the building’s beaux arts terra cotta exterior and vintage 1930s neon sign be preserved.

Who says adult entertainment has no redeeming cultural value?
